Departmental profile:

The commerce stream of Guwahati College was started in June 2009 as per Gauhati university permission vide E.C. Res. No. R/EC-2/2009/11(15) dt. 31.01.2009. Since its commencement, the Faculty of Commerce, Guwahati college has made considerable progress academically and professionally. The stream initially started with 49 students in the first batch in the year 2009. Gradually, the student strength of the department has increased and at the present moment it is 700.


Mission of the Department:

To emerge as a centre of excellence in imparting Commerce education in the North eastern region of India by emphasizing on all round development of the students and imbibing in them self reliance and employability skills.


Vision of the Department:

To provide affordable quality education in the commerce stream, thereby, nurturing holistic development to make effective contribution to the society.

At present there are 11 faculty members in the department with 1 permanent faculty, 9 contractual faculties and 1 guest faculty. The faculties of the commerce stream includes the following:

Action plans:

1. Long term:

i. To increase the number of permanent teaching staff.

ii. Development of infrastructural requirement of the department.

iii. To increase the number of books in the departmental library.

iv. To introduce self financing professional courses in the department.

v. Organize faculty development programs in the department.


2. Short term:

i. Increase the faculty strength and the number of students.

ii. Improve the academic performance of the students.

iii. Introduce short term courses for the overall development of the students like personality development courses, interview skills, etc.

iv. Provide practical exposure to the students to the field of commerce.

Departmental activities:

1. Students:

  • Attended a financial literacy awareness program on stock market conducted by BSE.
  • Students of the department participated in various college level activities and inter college activities related to sports and others.
  • The students of the department organize various programs in the department such as- freshmen social, commerce day, teachers day, and farewell for the outgoing batch.
  • Participated in workshops related to consumer protection, investors’, personality and personal skill development, etc.
  • Participated in Advantage Assam Program of the government.
  • In association with NSE, MSME-TRTC, NSIC, DIC, RGVN, IIBM, ICAI, etc the department has organized various programs for the benefit of the students.
  • The department also organizes career counselling and mentoring sessions for the students.
  • In order to acquaint the students with practical working environment of organisations the department organizes industrial visits for the students and give them project works related to the field of commerce.

2. Teachers:

  • Participated in state, national and international seminars.
  • Published research papers in journals and conference proceedings.
  • Provides career counseling to the students as and when required.
  • Provides guidance to the students in consultation with parents and guidance.
  • Part of various committees formed by the college authorities in various capacities.
  • Provides a platform to the students whereby they can interact with the environment outside the college.
  • Organizes workshops, seminars and lectures for the students as well as for the teachers.
  • Academic and administrative works related to the department.

Future plan of the department:

  • To open skill based short term courses.
  • To open Post graduate programs.
  • To organize seminars and workshops for the faculties and students.
