Year of establishment: 1964
About the department: The department of Education was started in Guwahati College from the very inception of the college in the year 1964. Prof Lakshahira Das and Prof. Satyabrata Dev Goswami offered honorary service to the department of Education at that time. After that Dr. Kathita HatiBarua and Mrs. Bina Hazarika join the department as a permanent faculty member.
Initially only P. U. ( Pre University) now it is called “ Higher Secondary” course and B.A pass course offered by the department. From the session 1983-84 , honours course in Education was introduced in the department. In spite of so many constrains such as lack of proper psychological laboratory facipties and other accommodations two students appeared in the final exam and came out successfully with honours. Up till now the department has been offering general and major course in education in degree level along with H.S. level as a subject.
Vision of the department:
The department has a vision to make the students able to pve in harmony with the different section of the people.
To help the students for all round development of personapty through academic and other co-curricular activities.
To create an awareness and healthy attitude towards their environment.

1. An Academic exchange programme with Kopabor College was held on 28/02/2017. An Interactive session on ‘technology in teaching learning process’ was conducted. Dr. Marami Gaswami, H.O.D, Dept. of Education, of the college was the co- ordinator for the programme.
2. A popular talk was held in the department in connection with the Teachers’ Day.on 5/09/2017. Dr. Bijit G. Basumatary, Asst. Prof. Dept. of Education of the college, depvered a talk on ‘pfe history of Radhakrishan and relevance of his philosophy in the present day society.’
3. Inauguration of wall magazine ‘PRAGNYA’ on 17/10/2017 by Dr. Dipak Sagar Das, Vice Principal of the college. He express his views about the current issue of the ‘PRAGNYA’.
4. Field trip to Bhutan. The students and teachers made a field trip to Sundhrup Jhankhar (Bhutan) and visited to monastery and interacted with local students.
5. A seminar was held among the students of Education on 23/04/2018. The topic of the seminar was ‘environmental awareness and attitude change’. A pvely interaction was followed by the seminar.
6. A departmental seminar on ‘teaching learning and pedagogy’ was held among the 5th sem(H) students on 3/09/2019. All the teachers of the dept. were also present in the seminar.
7. A departmental seminar was held on 26/04/2019 on various topic pke Modernization and education’, ‘Buddhist education system’, ‘Education and sociapzation process’, etc among the students of B.A 4th semester(H) .
8. A departmental seminar was held on 4/05/2019 among the students of Honors 4th semester students on ‘Education and society’. Students presented their papers in group.
9. A departmental seminar on 21/10/2019 on measurement and evaluation and immerging issues. Students presented their papers individually. A pvely interaction was followed by the seminar.
10. An Alumni meet was organized on 11/11/2019. A good number of alumni were present in the meeting and they express their views regarding the development of the department and the college.
11. Inauguration of wall magazine: ‘Pragnya’ was-Inaugurated by Dr Pratima Sarma, Vice Principal of the college on 23/03/2021. In her short speech appreaciated all concerned for their effort in getting the Magazine pubpshed in a good shape. The theme of the wall magazine was ‘Mental Health and Youth’
12. One parent-teacher meet was organized on 11/10/2021, in the Department. Some parents express views in regard to the progress of their children both in academic and other co-curricular activities. They offered their gratitude to the faculty members for their support and guidance extended to their children.
13. National education day was observed in the department of education on 11th Nov,2021 in memory of first education minister of independent India Abul Kalam Azad. An interactive session was organized between the students and teachers about the significance of the day.
14. Departmental Group Discussion was held among 3rd semester(H) students of the department on. 16/11/2021
15. Department of Education organized an Extension activity- Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on 22/12/21 at Chunsap, Noonmati area.
16. A departmental Seminar presentation was held on 27/06/2022 by the 4th semester students (Honours). Students presented papers in group.
17. A popular talk was organized by the Department on mental health and wellbeing on 30/6/2022. The Speaker was Nimi Borgiohain. (Chief cpnical psychologist, GNRC). A good number of teachers and students participated in the programme and interacted with the resource person.
18. World pteracy day was observed on 8/09/2022 by the department of Education. On the occasion, Department conducted a pteracy survey and awareness programme among the people of Railway colony slum area, Bamunimaidam.
19. ‘National Education Day’ was celebrated in the department on 11th Nov.2022. An essay writing competition was held among the students of the department in this connection. The topic of the essay was “Importance of moral value in the present day society.”
20. Departmental Quiz competition was organized among the students of department of Education on 15th Nov, 2022. A good number of students participated in the quize.
21. Departmental Seminar presentation was organized among the students of 5th sem (H) on various topics related to syllabus, on 17th Nov. 2022.
22. Departmental Group discussion was held among the students of 1st semester honours on 28/11/2022.
23. A field trip was organized by the department of education to Tagharia. on 30/11/2022.
24. Inauguration of wall magazine ‘PRAGNYA’ on 23/02/2023 by Dr. Marami Gaswami. She graced the gathering with valuable words. The theme of the magazine was Education system in India-‘Ancient Vs. Modern. She appreciated the effort of the the students for this creative work.
25. A workshop was organized on ‘Research methodology’ by Dr. Marami Gaswami. On 23/02/23. The students and the teachers of the department participated and interacted with the Resource person. The workshop was an fruitful one.

In addition to the academic activities the students also participate in various co curricular and extracurricular activities in college, state and national levels with fair amount of success.
