OVERVIEW

The Department of Hindi in Guwahati College is established in the year 1981. Shri Tarini Charan Kalita, M.A. B.T. is the founder lecturer of the department of Hindi. He joined in the College on 22nd July, 1981. In the beginning Hindi Deptt. got recognition only for MIL classes in Higher Secondary (P.U.) level. But provisionally TDC MIL classes were also accepted. It was only one man department at the beginning. In the year 1989 another lecturer Shri Deben Bora, M.A. was appointed in the department and in the same session 1989-90, TDC MIL classes in Hindi which was running provisionally was sanctioned. Then the department decided to open Major Course in Hindi from the session 1988-89 provisionally and it was running up to 1997 with cent percent good result. The major course in Hindi was affiliated in the session 1992-93 and received concurrence in the year 1997 vide the letter No. B(2) H.213/96/42 dt. 14.3.97. To fulfill the requirement to run major course two more lecturers were appointed in the department. In 1996 Shri Satyajit Kalita, M.A., and in the year 1997 Shri Golok Chandra Deka, M.A. joined in the department. After the retirement of Shri Tarini Charan Kalita the post was filled by Dr Kalpana Saikia in the year 2013.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Hindi bears the same mission as the College. The goal of the department is to produce best graduates so that they can be worthy citizens of our country. The department prepares the students to acquire ability for higher study. It also aims at better adaptability of the students towards the ever changing society and to inculcate values for better life. To attain the above mentioned goal the department follows specific objectives. Teaching a language and literature make a person able to know the society in past and present. Communication skill make the student able to understand people and their behaviour. Interaction among people broadens and it helps in unity and integrity of the nation. Spreading and developing of the language and literature is another important objective of our department.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

  • Departmental wall magazine ‘TARANG’ is inaugurated on the occasion of Hindi Diwas every year.
  • Excursion and field studies are conducted for the students of the department time to time.
  • Department of Hindi organizes seminars, meeting, talks and lecturers on various academic matters to enhance the quality of both teacher and students.
  • Guidance and counselling of the students for various curricular and co- curricular activities during the course and also for their future prospect.
  • Parents Teachers meetings are organised from time to time for the all-round development of the students. Besides all these, department organizes activities such as teachers’ day, freshmen social, farewell etc.
  • Department of Hindi conducts a certificate course on Hindi speaking.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS:

Most of the students are admitted in PG courses in GU, Cotton College State University, NEHU and other Indian Universities. Some students pursue professional courses like B.Ed , where as some other take vocational courses such as Computer courses. Many ex students have been well placed in Government as well as Private sectors.
