OVERVIEW

The department of Physics was established in 1984 with introduction of higher secondary course in Science stream. The department started functioning under former Principal, late Dr. B. R. Deka and head of the department Retd. Prof. Haridev Goswami. In the year 1987, the department introduced the three-year degree course in Physics as the general subject and finally introduced Physics as major course in 2003. At present, the department offers three-year B.Sc. Physics (Honors and Generic) CBCS course under Gauhati University alongside two-year higher secondary Physics course under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council.

VISION

To become an excellent academic center to produce professionally competent graduates in Physics who can contribute towards the betterment of the society through their service and leadership and also to emphasize on holistic development of the students in each step.


MISSION

  • To draw out the students’ potentials and guide them to be innovative and establish themselves within their capacity in industry, teaching and research.
  • To make the students future ready at the forefront of research in both experimental and theoretical physics.
  • To inculcate scientific temperament and a sense of social commitment in students for the progress of societies and sustaining humanity
  • To support the developmental activities of the college by encouraging the students to participate both in co-curricular and extracurricular events.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

The Department regularly organizes student seminars and also encourages the students to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The department arranges academic field trips and visits to academic institutions/research laboratories during the normal course of academic session. The department also regularly publishes departmental wall magazine titled “WAVE”.

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Three students, Mr. MrigankaSandilya, Mr. Sanjiwan Kaushik Baruah and Miss Kakoli Roy of 6th semester, participated in 66th foundation day celebrated by department of Physics, Gauhati University on 20.02.2020 and awarded 2nd prize in poster making compition.
  • Two students Miss Manika Kalita and Miss Shyamalima Sarma attended one workshop on ‘8th school on system design using microcontroller’ organized by department of Instrumentation and USIC, Gauhati University from 16-21st May, 2022.
  • Students of the Dept. of Physics participated in the National Science Day events held at Center of Plasma Physics (CPP), Sonapur on 28.02.2023 and won several prizes in Essay writing competition, quiz and poster presentation.
