OVERVIEW

The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Guwahati College was established on 8th February, 1982. The first Programme Officer of NSS, Guwahati College Prof. Tarini Kalita started off with 100 volunteers. At present, NSS Guwahati College has two units for its male and female volunteers. Dr. Manash Jyoti Deka (Department of Chemistry) and Gunjana Dey (Department of English) are the Programme Officers in charge of the boys and girls unit respectively. The sole aim of NSS Guwahati College is to motivate students to participate in nation-building activities through events and projects aimed towards social welfare and awareness.

AIM

NSS Guwahati College strives to develop the personality of students as well as its volunteers through community service. It aims at channelizing the energy of the youth by engaging them in events that serve the greater good and also uphold the motto of NSS, which is “Not Me, But You”.

OBJECTIVES

  • To work with/among people
  • To engage in creative and constructive social action.
  • To enhance his/her knowledge of himself/ herself and the community
  • To put his/her scholarship to practical use in mitigating at least some of the problems
  • To gain skill in the exercise of democratic leadership
  • To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • To bridge the gap between the educated and uneducated masses
  • To practice national integration and social harmony

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • 3 volunteers of NSS Guwahati College participated in the Pre-Republic day Camp held at Kalinga Stadium, Orissa.
  • Sri Bhaskar Jyoti Kalita of our College was selected as contingent for the Republic Day Parade Camp, 2012
  • In the 2012 Republic Day Parade former Programme Officer Dr. Satyajit Kalita participated as the Contingent leader from the Northeast Region.
  • 5 volunteers of our College took part in the Pilot Project Advancer Programme held at Dzukou Valley, Nagaland in 2012.

21 DECEMBER 2021

NSS-NCC TREKKING CUM CLEANING DRIVE

VENUE: WIRELESS HILLS, BIRKUCHI, NARENGI

An NSS-NCC Trekking Cum Cleaning Drive was organized on 21 December 2021 which was carried out under the supervision of NSS PO Dr. Manash Jyoti Deka where a total of ten NSS volunteers participated. While trekking the volunteers carried out a cleaning drive collecting all sorts of litter on the way, especially single use plastic bottles and bags in the Wireless Hills of Birkuchi, Narengi.

WINTER CLOTHES DONATION DRIVE

DISTRIBUTION -ADOPTED VILLAGE HAJONGBARI

A donation drive was organized by the NSS units of Guwahati College in collaboration with NCC Guwahati College. For this purpose donations in the form of winter clothes and cash were done by faculty members, staff members, students and ex-students of Guwahati College on the eve of Christmas. Later the NSS and NCC POs visited various slum areas of Guwahati as well as the adopted village of Guwahati College namely Hajongbari where the donated items were distributed among the needy.

COLLEGE CLEANING DRIVE

A college cleaning drive was carried out by the NSS volunteers of the college to prepare the campus for the upcoming Republic Day celebration.

SWACHCHTA ACTION PLAN

VENUE: CHUNGSALI GRANT

A day-long awareness cum cleaning drive was carried out by the students of the Eco Club in collaboration with the NSS Unit of Guwahati College on 12 March 2022. The drive was a part of the Swachhta Action Plan, implemented by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) and supported by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The programme was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Pinky Baruah, Coordinator, Eco Club, Guwahati College and Dr Manash Jyoti Deka and Gunjana Dey, Programme Officers of NSS Unit, Guwahati College. The theme of the programme was to spread awareness on curbing single use plastic. The students of the Eco Club and NSS Unit of Guwahati College interacted with the local people and made them understand the hazardous impact of SUPs on the environment. A short street play was enacted by a few students emphasizing the dangers of SUP. The students and teachers carried out a rally and cleaned selective areas of the Chunchali area littered with SUPs. Eco-friendly dustbins were donated to local shops in an attempt to encourage the use of more sustainable options. A total of 150 participants including students and teachers participated in the awareness drive.

CRICKET MATCH ON WOMEN’S DAY

VENUE: GUWAHATI COLLEGE

A cricket match was organized between the NCC and NSS girl volunteers on account of International Women’s Day 2022. The volunteers participated in the match with great enthusiasm. Faculty members of the college donated trophies, prizes and refreshments to the teams. The NSS girls emerged as the winners of the match

SHAHEED-E-DIWAS

VENUE: GUWAHATI COLLEGE

Shaheed Diwas was celebrated in the college campus by lighting a lamp. A talk was delivered by Mr Naren Patgiri, Associate Professor, Department of History, Guwahati College where he spoke about the martyrs Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru and their contribution to the Indian freedom struggle.

TREKKING CUM ANTI DRUG CAMPAIGN

VENUE: HASTINAPUR

Students of Guwahati College NSS Unit, in association with Guwahati College Students Union participated in a drug awareness programme on 16 May 2022. The programme was carried out under the able guidance of NSS Programme Officer Dr Manash Jyoti Deka. The students went on hiking towards Hastinapur Village near Jorabat where they interacted with the local people and spread awareness about drug abuse and addiction among youngsters and the measures that can be taken to curb this menace. The hiking started at 8:30 am and a total of thirty students participated in the programme.

FIVE-DAY ORIENTATION PROGRAMME ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

VENUE: GAUHATI UNIVERSITY

The Programme Officers Dr. Manash Jyoti Deka and Gunjana Dey participated in a five-day orientation programme on Youth Development especially designed for NSS POs by NSS Cell Gauhati University in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development. During the course of the training programme the programme officers were acquainted with various duties of an NSS PO and their role and responsibilities towards the volunteers. The POs came back with renewed knowledge about NSS through talks and discussions on various issues related to social awareness and accountability.

COLLEGE INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

VENUE: GAUHATI COLLEGE

NSS volunteers participated in the Independence Day celebrations of the college. The volunteers took part in the parade and assisted in other activities that took place during the course of the day.

NSS DAY PLANTATION

A plantation programme was organized inside the college campus on account of NSS Day. The Principal of Guwahati College, Dr. Pranab Sandilya planted a sapling along with the NSS POs and the Pranab Goswami, Head, Department of Chemistry.

NATIONAL UNITY DAY RUN

VENUE: GAUHATI COLLEGE

NSS volunteers participated in a marathon on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The marathon started from the college campus and students continued till Zoo Road. Students also took part in the activities held in the college on account of the special occasion.

NSS volunteers of Guwahati College participated in the programme organized by Assam State Aids Control Society in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare and NACO.

JANUARY 2023

NSS SPECIAL CAMP

VENUE: GUWAHATI COLLEGE

A special week-long camp for the NSS volunteers was organized at Guwahati College on the theme Social Awareness. The camp started from 16 January and continued till 22 January 2023. A total of 30 volunteers participated in the camp guided by the Programme Officers. Various activities and events were carried out during the course of the camp keeping in mind the overall benefit of the students with special emphasis on “Social Awareness”. Students engaged in cleaning drives, cooking and food distributing and also attended various talks and lectures given by experts invited during the course of the camp from various fields.

NSS VS NCC GIRLS’ WOMEN’S DAY CRICKET MATCH

VENUE: GUWAHATI COLLEGE

A cricket match was held between the girl volunteers of NSS and NCC on account of International Women’s Day 2023. A match of 7 overs was conducted where the NSS team emerged as the winner. Trophies donated by Amal Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry in memory of his late father Barun Das were handed to the Winning team and the Runner Up team.
