NATIONAL CADET CORPS(NCC) belonging to boys ( Senior division) came into existence in Guwahati College in 1980. At that time Mr. Dharma Prasad Phukan, lecturer in Geography department was the NCC officer as care taker. In 1981 Mr. Phukan took his Commission and recognized as Associate NCC Officer. In the year Mr. Bimal Chandra Das, Associate. Professor in geography took the charge and got his Commission in 2003-04 and till today he has been running the Boys NCC (SD) under 1 Assam Bn NCC, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati-7. The present strength of the boys NCC ( Army Wind) is 52.
Different NCC training camps through which cadets may go for detail training in different events:-
It is worth mentioning that NCC 'C' certificate holders have various opportunities for Government services and for getting Scholarships like entry in defence service as commissioned Officers, entry in defence service in other ranks, entry in CRPF, Telecommunication Deptts. Etc.
It is worth mentioning that last year two boys Cadets from our College with 'C' certicate have joined in defence.
The Girls Division of the NCC in India was started in July 1949 and Girl's NCC in Guwahati College comes into existence in the year 1989. It is running under 60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC, Panjabari, Guwahati-37. Mrs. Samim Akhter was the first NCC officer of the Guwahati College girls wing. After her retirement, Dr.Arati Bairagee, Department of Zoology, Guwahati College has taken the charge as care-taker officer in the year 2007. At present Dr. Kalpana Saikia, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, is in charge of Girls’ NCC and till today she has been running the Girls NCC in the College.
The College has a total strength of 108 NCC cadets under 60 Assam girls Battalion NCC.
The cadets have made the College proud by representing the North-Eastern Region in different national level camps and NCC activities in many parts of the country. Many of our cadets has represented the nation in prestigious international meets as part of Youth Exchange Programme. By obtaining 'B' and 'C' certificates, a sizeable no of students has enrolled themselves in different grades of the three services of the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India.
Community Development, personality development, adventure training, YEP, Institutional training ,shooting, map reading etc are being taught to the cadets in the regular Sunday classes in the College premises.
Munmi Roychudhury, Senior under officer, a student of BA 1st year, is a highly accomplished cadet who combines brilliance in academic in all NCC activities. She represented the NER in Republic Day camp held from 30st of Jan, 2010. The camp was held at Garrison Army Parade Ground, Delhi cantonment.
She also visited Bangladesh as a part of YEP in the year 2011.
