The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces. The NCC in India was formed in 1948 with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. The Girls Division of the NCC was started in July 1949 in order to provide equal opportunities to school and college-going girls. The NCC provides platform for school and college students on voluntary basis as a Tri-Services Organisation, comprising the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. It is engaged in developing the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens.

Guwahati College Boy’s NCC:

The NCC (Army Wing) in Guwahati college came into existence in 1980. Mr. Dharma Prasad Phukan, a lecturer in Geography department was appointed as the first Care Taker Officer (CTO) and he was officially commissioned as an Associate NCC Officer (ANO) in 1981. Since its inception the cadets actively participated in various activities of the college in discipline and with great vigour. The NCC unit of the college is registered under 1 Assam Battalion and the present strength of the NCC cadet is 51.


Mr. Bimal Chandra Das, an associate professor in Geography department took charge of the NCC in 2003-04 as a commissioned ANO and served it till 2018. In 2018, Dr. Elwin Kro Nihang, assistant professor of Economics was appointed as the CTO till 2022. The present CTO Dr. Nicodim Basumatary, assistant professor of Economics took the charge since 2022.

Guwahati College Girl’s NCC:

The Girl's NCC in Guwahati College came into existence in the year 1989. It is running under 60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC. The College has a total strength of 51 NCC cadets under 60 Assam girls Battalion NCC.


Mrs. Samim Akhter was the first NCC Care-Taker Officer (CTO) of the Guwahati College girl’s wing. Subsequently, many faculty members of the college took charge of the girls NCC Unit as CTO: Dr. Arati Bairagee (2007-2013), Dr. Pallabi Medhi (2014-2016), Dr. Kalpana Saikia (2016-2018), Dr. Bandita Das (2018-2021). The present CTO Dr. Swapnali Saikia, assistant professor of Geography department took the charge since 2021.

NCC MOTTO:

The motto of the NCC is “UNITY AND DISCIPLINE.”

NCC PLEDGE:

“We the Cadets of the National Cadet Corps Do solemnly pledge that we shall always uphold the unity of India. We resolve to be disciplined and responsible citizen of our nation. We shall undertake positive community service in the spirit of selflessness and concern for our fellow beings”.

AIMS OF NCC:

  • To develop character, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook spirit at adventure and the ideals of selfless service amongst the youth of the country.
  • To create a human resource of trained and motivated youth, to provide leadership in all walks of life always available for the service to the nation.
  • To provide a suitable environment to motivate youth, to take up a career in the Armed Forces.

ROLE OF NCC:

  • To train students in developing qualities like social service, team spirit, leadership, discipline and self-confidence.
  • To develop national spirit among the students.
  • To make the cadets acquaint with the Army/ Airforce/ Navy.
  • To make the cadets better citizens
  • To inculcate spirit of adventure amongst the cadets

ACTIVITIES:

The NCC cadets of the college conduct and participate in several events throughout the year. Some of the activities are as follows:

  • Advance leadership course
  • Course Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling and Manali
  • Para Troops camps
  • National Integration Camps
  • Republic Day Camp
  • Hiking and Trekking camp
  • Independence Day Camp

ENROLMENT:

The enrolment in the Guwahati College NCC Unit has been rising every year. The selection process for enrolment into the unit starts from the month of August every year. The following chart depicts number of enrolments into the NCC Unit of Guwahati College in the last five years.

NUMBER OF CADETS WHO OBTAINED ‘B & C’ CERTIFICATE:

Ever since the NCC unit started in Guwahati College, many cadets have cleared B and C certificate examination. The following table shows the number of cadets with B and C certificate.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Since its inception, the cadets of Guwahati College have brought laurels to the institution by representing the college in particular and the North-Eastern Region of India in general at different national level camps and NCC activities. Many of our cadets has represented the nation in prestigious international meets such as Youth Exchange Programme. By obtaining 'B' and 'C' certificates, a sizeable number of students has enrolled themselves in different grades of the three services of the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India and in other services as well.

Community Development, personality development, adventure training, YEP, Institutional training, shooting, map reading etc are being taught to the cadets in the regular Sunday classes in the College premises

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Deepjyoti Sarma participated in the Republic Day Camp in New Delhi during 2022.
